Dear Mr. Key
The hopes for our future are resting with you!
The outlook for our economy are bleak - maybe even dark, just yesterday the NZ central bank did lower the interest rate by 150 points.
Today the industrial production of Japan was reported to have declined within the last 12 month by 9.6 %, Japan as one of the most important trading partners, this will have dire consequences for NZ, from tourism to export of raw materials such as fish, wood and meat.
The country and the world are braising for a massive recession.
Newsweek did name NZ one of the most effected countries of the world slowdown.
There is no place to hide,
Fortunately NZ is and has been a country of great vigor and will rise to the occasion and this slow-down also brings opportunities.
The once in a lifetime opportunity is to set important motions into place to ensure the future of this country for the next 20, 50 and 100 years.
Decisions made now will have a lasting impact on us all, and our children.
As first we must understand that the economy of the world is moving (and always has been) in cycles.
What we perceive today “as end of the NZ economy “is nothing but one more downturn followed by an upturn in a few years (2011 maybe?)
Jobs will be lost in the next 2 years and than created again in the years to follow, nothing new.
What is much more important is to protect our single most precious asset!
The fantastic and outstanding nature of NZ,
We all must understand that tourism already the biggest segment of the NZ economy is here to stay and to grow. People from all over the world are flying 10.000 km to see untouched nature, breathe clean air and walk unspoiled beaches!
And while NZ has done much to protect this asset, one part of it is in great danger!
NZ recreational fishing is suffering this year like never before.
Commercial fishing has already destroyed many important fish habitats and fish stock is dangerously depleted. Kahawai once a fish in great abundance is hardly to be found, no longer can we find large work ups, just the memory still lingers in the mind of some of us who have seen them and are willing to tell the story of large work-ups miles long,..
Already now Marlborough Sounds are closed until 2012 for Blue Cod fishing due to depletion on good size fish and are also closed for netting and commercial fishing.
Commercial fishing has been in decline since the 70s and many governments had found it necessary to support NZ commercial fishery to keep it alive!
But lets pause here for a moment and consider this,
So in effect the NZ taxpayer is paying for NZ companies to destroy NZ's fishery by massively overfishing - trenching - long lining and netting - taking today is much as they can not caring for the fish on our table tomorrow.
Europe (that is where I grew up) has made the same mistake and today the North Sea (once one of the most productive fisheries of Europe is a mercury toxic wasteland) and the
So many in this country are criticizing
Already is the economical factor of tourist actives connected with recreational fishing are by far more important than the combined turnover of the fishing industry.
Already are more than 20 times more kiwis are employed in tourism linked to recreational fishing.
Please Mr.Key consider the future of your - our country - buy back the quotas from the commercial trolling boats, and long liners, buy their ships at open market value and lets help their employees to find jobs in other industries and let us never again permit commercial -industrial -organized fishing to deplete NZ oceans.
You just need to ask yourself - if there is one thing you want your country to remember you for, what could that be?
Could it be that you, single handed preserved the future of NZ healthy oceans, to ensure an abundance of fish on the table of every keen NZ recreational fisher?
I am sure this would guaranty you a special place in NZ history books!
Yours most kindly
Philip Binder
